trekking in Cabo Verde

Trek in Cap Verde, on the island of Santa Antao: a volcanic island with a jagged relief!

I had heard my partner talk about Cap Verde for a long time as she often took people trekking to another very similar island, the island of Madeira.
Rather than flutter between the islands and risk missing out on the Cape Verdian 'ambiance', I decided to concentrate on one them, the Island of Santa Antao.
In the fifteenth century, the Portuguese colonists landed on this uninhabited island and made their slaves (the ancestors of today's Cape Verdians) build miles of paved roads, suspended between the earth, the sky and the sea.  These paths were our saviour and enabled us to cross the whole of the island on foot;  from the virtually uninhabited and arid West Coast to the East Coast with its green valleys or "Ribeiras", where small high altitude cottages are virtually engulfed by vast luxurious gardens, banana plantations, sugar cane, cassava and yams.  It was an ambitious and physically-demanding itinerary due to the altitude and steepness of the paths hanging off these walls of volcanic rocks.  We arranged for a support vehicle to follow with our luggage and the cook (except for the first camp where we were able  to use donkeys!). In terms of accommodation, we had a bit of everything: we slept under canvass, on the roofs of houses, inside school houses, in guest house rooms and even in a hotel! They made us welcome at each stop and it was also an opportunity to taste every variety of locally-brewed rum!  The Cape Verdians  have a gentle, melancholic smile a bit like the music of Cesaria Evora.  Her rythmns get under your skin along with these magnificent panoramic views...
I have to make a special mention to our local guide, Jon, from Nobia, the local agent on the ground.  He was the ideal person with whom to fine-tune the trip.  Thank you Jon!
This trip was also a special occasion to celebrate a tenth anniversary with my small group:   We have been getting together every year for the past ten years for a unique trek; we have met some wonderful people and together,  have experienced exotic cultures and magnificent lands.  It all began over lunch in the Signal restaurant above Val d'Isere, when I became very over-excited about Romania, which is an amazing country that means a lot to me.  So off we all went the following year, accompanied by Doinitsa. It was an incredibly emotional journey as we were close to the people, their religion and their culture..  I still remember it as though it were yesterday! We then went to Morocco and crossed the magnificent Mgoun range in the Atlas mountains, followed by Mauritania and a trek in the Sahara desert, then a more cultural trip to Turkey, combining the magical Capadoccia with long gentle treks along the Lycian Coast whilst living on a typical Turkish sailing boat or gulet, two incredible consecutive trips to Madagascar in the company of Andri, who is now almost a brother to me, and with whom we shared wonderful adventures and unforgettable meetings,  a unique discovery of Montenegro and the Kotor Delta, a first trip to Bhutan - an astonishing little kingdom deep in the Himalayas and finally a tough crossing of the Central Pyrenees by way of the HRP.
I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the trust you have always placed in me to plan, organise and then lead these trips. I would like to thank you for your smile and good grace and for putting up all those situations that were less than ideal or uncomfortable but which perhaps brought us closer to the people and made our adventures together into pure joy..
My thanks go therefore to Billie and Trevor N, Heather and John H, David M., Sue N.,Tudor J.,Nina M., without forgetting Susan who left us two years ago..
We will be gathering again soon to live our next adventure together!
