This spring, the lack of snow at altitude left the glaciers somewhat dangerous and encourages me to leave them well alone (open crevasses, weak snow bridges etc..) Once doesn't make it a habit and the Vanoise Park offers itself as a good option! So I arrange to meet my Flemish friends Peter, Rul, Bart and Steven also affectionately known as "Beers and Cigars" (I wonder why...) in Bonneval sur Arc....
Our aim is to do the tour of the Albaron, a tour known to some as the "crossing of the Haute Maurienne". It is a classic itinerary but one that has recently been neglected at our loss! Every day is magnificent in itself with very varied terrain and great descents including the 1800m descent of the Albaron itself.
We had the run of the huts at the Carro, Evettes, Gastladi and Averole huts - well there were a few people at the Averole hut but it was the start of the Easter holidays! We were generously looked after everywhere we went and the food was plentiful.
The temperatures were a month ahead of schedule and were unusually high for the time of the year so we found ourselves having to rise with the dawn and do nothing all afternoon (isn't it nice to do nothing.....) but the benefit was that we enjoyed good snow and good skiing - often on perfectly untracked slopes of spring snow! It was only in Italy that we had to shake ourselves up a little to help the hut keeper Roberto to open the refuge: we helped him store crates of food and boxes and followed this with a major session with the shovels to clear and flatten the snow around the front of the hut so that the sunlight could flood into the dining area....
There is no mistaking the peak of the Albaron, the symbol and emblem of the Maurienne valley, if you ski in Val d'Isere or on the Pissaillas glacier of the Fornet: this 'table' mountain is protected by a 50m 'easy' but 'aerial' climb using fixed lines. Steven called me a whole variety of names as a result of my rappelling skills as I let him down but hey...........the view from the top was worth it!
In summary, we enjoyed a rather 'cool' week despite the challenges and the uncertainty of the searing heat and it is a great route that we should definitely re-visit next spring........
See you next year my little Belgian friends, it was good to spend some time in the mountains together.......
Un grand classique délaissé: le tour de l'Albaron
Le manque de neige en altitude rend les glaciers plutôt malsains ce printemps, et m'incitent à les éviter (crevasses très ouvertes, ponts de neige fragiles); Une fois n'est pas coutume, la Vanoise semble être un bon compromis! C'est donc à Bonneval sur Arc que je donne rendez-vous à Peter, Rul, Bart et Steven, mes amis flamands baptisés "Bières et cigares", au vu de leur penchant avéré pour la chose...
Au programme le tour de l'Albaron , ou appelé encore la traversée de la haute Maurienne. C'est un grand classique mais moins prisé maintenant, et à tord! toutes les journées sont magnifiques et très variées, offrant de belles descentes avec notamment celle de l'Albaron: 1800 mètres de dénivelée!
Carro, Evettes, Gastaldi et Avérole, tous ces refuges visités étaient déserts lors de notre passage (un peu de monde à Averole mais c'était le début des vacances de Pâques) malgré un accueil partout chaleureux et une cuisine toujours généreuse.
Les isothermes excessivement haut pour cette saison (un mois d'avance!), nous ont obligé à nous lever aux aurores, et de buller tous les après-midis (qu'il est doux de ne rien faire....), mais nous avon eu de très belles journées de glisse, le plus souvent sur une douce neige de printemps sans traces!
Il n'y a qu'en Italie où nous nous sommes remués la paillasse pour aider Roberto le gardien, à ouvrir son refuge: rangement de caisses et victuailles, et grosse session de pelletage pour aplanir le devant du refuge et permettre à la lumière de s'inviter dans la salle commune...
Quant à l'Albaron, sommet emblématique de la Maurienne, Vous ne pouvez le manquer si vous skiez à Val d'isère sur le glacier du Pissaillas: ce sommet tabulaire est défendu par 50 mètres d'escalade facile mais aérienne, équipés de cordes fixes. Steven m'a traité un peu de tous les noms pour le rappel occasionné à la descente mais bon... La vue panoramique en valait la peine!!
Au total une semaine très cool malgré l'incertitude due aux fortes chaleurs, et un très beau raid où il fera bon y revenir le printemps prochain...
A l'année prochaine mes p'tis belges, c'était gai d'être ensemble en montagne!...
